Cancer is Scary.. Isnt? How to reduce your chance of getting Cancer

In the news tonight, a 14 years old girl who suffered from Cancer  just passed away, really sad.   I thought to myself, is she not too young to die of this killer disease? But then again, Cancer is not a respecter of any age. It occurs in both young and the old, male and female ..There have been 25% Increase in prostrate cancer in the last 2 years among men, though there are more screening test than ever but the world is experiencing Cancer epidemic.
Lung Cancer, Breast Cancer, Colon/rectal cancers and Uterine cancers are the most common form of Cancers among women.
  • About 1 in 8 women are likely to develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime.
  • About 1 in 16 women are likely to develop lung and bronchus cancer.
  • A woman odds of getting Colon and rectal  cancer is 1 in 19
  • A woman’s odds of getting Uterine cancer is 1 in 41
Causes of Cancer
A lecture by Dr Peter Atherton during a forever Living product success day explained in length about the major causes of Cancer. He noted that Age, Genetics and Environment are the major causes of Cancer though they also have some subgroups. Each type of cancer has a different risk factor but living a healthy lifestyle, however, will reduce your chances of getting cancer.
  • Ages can not be reversed and there are chances that as people get older so are their chances of getting this ailment.
  • Genetics is a big factor because it has been found that cancer runs in some family.  Your risk is doubled if your mother, sister, or daughter has had it.
  • Environmental factors is further grouped into Diet, Exposure to pollutants and Lifestyles
How to Lower Your Chances of Getting Cancer
  • Diet –(Reduce calorie intake, Reduce Saturated fat intake, Reduce the amount of sugar consumed)
Eating variety of healthy foods could reduce your risk of getting certain types of cancer. Though this is not an assurance, but a healthy diet will prevent Obesity and any form of Cancer
Avoid excess sugar-they are linked to breast cancer and all cancer.
Reduce the intake of saturated fat.   Stay away from any fat which has been chemically altered, this type of fat are found in pre-cooked food, canned food, take away meals and cookies. High fat diets may increase your risk of prostrate, colon and uterus
Reduce red meat consumption
Five a day is a phrase which should encourages people to eat variety of fruit and Vegetables in a day.  Make them part of your daily diet. Diet should be rich in vegetable and fruit.  However, some vegetable are better than others e.g. dark vegetables such as broccoli, spinach, cabbage, Beans, legumes and cabbage may help reduce your risk of colon and stomach cancers.
Drink plenty of water. Ionized alkaline water from a water ionizer is believed by many doctors and scientists to contribute to an alkaline internal environment in which disease cannot thrive. It is recommended that an adult should drink 2 litres of water a day.
Eat a diet high in anti-oxidants like beta-carotene and Vitamin C. Red fruits like strawberries, cherries and tomatoes contain Lycopene which is a form .of anti-oxidant.
Get more vitamin D. Recent studies indicate that people with plenty of vitamin D in their blood are four times less likely to develop cancer.
  • Lifestyle-(Smoking, Alcohol consumption, Increase exercise at least 2 hours a week, Physical activity, Stress and Sleep)
People hear all the time that Smoking is one of the major causes of lung Cancer yet they indulge themselves in it. It can cause lungs, oesophagus, larynx, mouth, bladder, kidney, pancreas, and cervix and stomach cancer.
Reduce your alcohol intake.
Stay active and exercise at least 2 hours a week because exercises reduce obesity which is a risk factor for some cancer.
Get your immunizations. Certain cancers are associated with infections that can be prevented with shots. Hepatitis B can increase your risk of liver cancer and HPV (Human papillomavirus) can lead to cervical cancer. Be sure to talk to your doctor about what is right for you.
See your doctor regularly and get screened. This can lead to early detection and increase your chance of successful treatment.
Get an adequate amount of sleep daily.
Reduce stress. Scientists observe stressed rates are at higher risk for cancer.
  • Exposure to pollutants-(Free radical attack, Oxidation damage, External sources)
Eating too much of burn food is not a good idea, it causes   free radical
UV ray exposure to the skin through long exposure to sun of tanning causes skin cancer.

Avoid potentially carcinogenic compounds, such as formaldehyde (found in car exhaust and in sealant products) benzene, asbestos and many others.
Exhaust fume should be avoided: avoid automobile fumes and similar air impurities.
People in city die more of cancer than in countryside because of pollution all the time.
Protect yourself from the sun. Skin cancer is one of the most common kinds of cancer and also one of the most preventable. Avoid being outside during the time that the sun is strongest. If you need to be outside, cover up with sun block, hats, and sunglasses and stay in the shade.
Get your home tested for radon.  This can greatly reduce the risk of getting lung cancer.
